Jennifer Chase, DMD: Introduction to a Physiologic Approach to TMD: Diagnosis, Orthotic Therapy, and Airway Integration

This 2-hour introductory course provides an overview of a physiologic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) as utilized in our office. The presentation is designed to introduce clinicians to practical workflows that incorporate objective data, modern imaging, and predictable treatment protocols.

We will review our diagnostic process, including the use of cone beam CT (CBCT) imaging and computerized jaw tracking with BioPAK to evaluate joint position, muscle activity, and functional patterns. Attendees will gain an understanding of how this data helps determine a stable, physiologic mandibular position.

The course will introduce orthotic therapy as a foundational treatment for TMD, including indications, basic design concepts, and expected outcomes. In addition, we will briefly explore the relationship between TMD and airway health, including the role of Eccovision technology in the development of sleep appliances.

Through case examples and clinical insights, participants will gain a clear understanding of how a physiologic approach can improve diagnostic clarity and patient outcomes. This course is intended as an introduction, providing a framework that clinicians can build upon in more advanced training.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the fundamentals of a physiologic approach to TMD

  • Review diagnostic tools including CBCT and BioPAK

  • Identify the role of orthotic therapy in TMD treatment

  • Recognize the connection between TMD and airway considerations
