Treatment Planning with an Understanding of Restorative Controversies in Implant Dentistry

Controversies exist because there is more than one accepted method available. We're challenged by choosing from so many methods – so why not use evidence-based dentistry, clinical success, and common sense to make the best decision among those options. On top of the individual patient issues like their general health, our patient's dental history including periodontal disease, parafunction and age all impact the outcome when we treat them with dental implant restorations. Recent research has clarified how definitive restorative outcome is impacted by the number of implants, the angulation and depth of the implant placement and the tissue type that supports the implant.
Peri-implantitis, bone loss, biomechanic screw-loosening issues and catastrophic failure are all issues over which we can exhibit some control with attention to the details that research identifies for us.
Using a few clinical cases, we will treatment plan solutions that will help to strengthen and reinforce these restorative issues to improve the outcome for all our patients.
M. Nader Sharifi, DDS, MS, holds a certificate in prosthodontics and a master’s degree in biomaterials from Northwestern University. He received his dental education at the University of Illinois. He has presented more than 600 lectures covering numerous topics on restorative dentistry, earning him recognition from esteemed study groups, societies and associations across the nation and internationally.
Dr. Sharifi currently maintains a full-time private practice of prosthodontics in Chicago’s downtown loop. Dr. Sharifi is a former assistant professor at Northwestern University and currently uses his experience as a five-day-a-week wet-gloved dentist to ensure time-saving and cost-effective care are represented in his lectures. In 1996 he was named to the American Dental Association’s Speakers Bureau, and in 2007 Chicago Dental Society honored him with the Gordon Christensen Distinguished Lecturer Award. He has also been honored with fellowship in the American College of Dentists and membership in the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry—both in 2010.
